The design seeks to upgrade a post-war era high-rise apartment in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. Compressing conventional sleeping spaces releases the bedroom divisions that previously dictated the typical floor plan, opening up possibilities for re-partitioning all resident units. The result is a flexible unit type that can accommodate residents of various group sizes and lifestyles. The proposal adds 25% additional square footage to the existing structure, increases the total number of units, introduces a high-performance building envelope, and revises unit layouts to better adjust for today’s social demographics.
